RBMA documentary: Too Old To Be New, Too New To Be Classic: 12 Years of DFA

Red Bull Music Academy and Brooklyn-based production company m ss ng p eces are producing a series of captivating short films that capture fresh and iconic music stories and characters.

For this debut episode, we turn our attention to the iconic DFA, the NYC record label that got the indie kids to dance, who defined the sound of the ’00s with a succession of releases that took disco’s rhythmic template, punk’s rebel energy, new wave’s avant humor and created something entirely new.

Narrated by Marc Maron, it features music and appearances from James Murphy, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Holy Ghost!, The Juan MacLean, Shit Robot, Sinkane, YACHT and many more.

Secret Circuit Album on BIS

Secret Circuit is Eddie Ruscha, a Los Angeles-based producer whose career has taken its fair share of twists and turns over the years. He got his start as a member of ’90s shoegaze group Medicine, and he’s collaborated with members of Rub N Tug, Cibo Matto and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti all while working synths as Secret Circuit.

Ruscha has been notably prolific over the last few years, with a number of self-released albums to his name and singles for Prins Thomas’s Internasjonal label as well as Tim Sweeney’s label Beat In Space. Like much of Secret Circuit’s recent output, Tactile Galactics explore a distinctly psychedelic side of contemporary disco and house

Between The Beats: Nina Kraviz

Between The Beats is a new series of short films from the online music portal Resident Advisor…to reveal the highs and lows of life as a touring DJ.
The first one is about Siberian DJ/Producer Nina Kraviz

Once she was a model: Carmen Villain

We’re used to know the Norwegian Smalltown Supersound most of all for its DJ/producers like Lindstrom or Todd Terje, and it’s not the first time we listen to incredible good albums like last year Neneh Cherry one, but this one is a great surprise. It seems to come directly from the nineties in a perfect Sonic Youth style but at the same time fitting exactly with nowadays mood. Once she was a model (Carmen Hillestad, has appeared on the covers of Vogue and Nylon), now she’s an incredibly talented musician called Carmen Villain. A great album called ‘Sleeper’ anticipated by the single ‘Lifeissin’. Dark, psychedelic, a lot of guitars, reverbs and pedals and a sexy gloomy night drive atmosphere. We love you Carmen..
